5 reasons it’s hard to calculate accurate product costs

The goal of any business is to make a profit. To know your exact profit, you need to calculate the cost of the goods you produce accurately. This is not a simple task, especially in complex make-to-order, multi-stage manufacturing.

So what can get in the way of cost calculation?

1. Inaccurate data

Incorrect recording of raw materials, supplies, or working time can significantly distort the calculations. Even small errors add up and affect the final figure.

2. Difficulty accounting for indirect costs

Office rent, utilities, administrative expenses: all of these also affect cost. Such costs are often allocated incorrectly or not taken into account at all.

3. Price changes

Fluctuations in the prices of raw materials, transportation, and other resources turn cost calculation into a moving target. Constant price monitoring becomes a necessity.

4. Incorrect cost allocation

If a company has several product types, it is important to allocate costs among them properly. An error in the calculation method can make a product look unprofitable on paper when in reality it is not.

5. Lack of automation

Many companies still calculate costs manually or in Excel, which increases the likelihood of errors and takes more time. Modern accounting systems solve this problem, but not everyone uses them.
